This treatment uses a pico (picosecond) laser to deliver very short pulses of energy to the skin in tiny, spaced points, leaving the skin in between untreated. We offer it for the face. A course of several treatments is often needed. Assessment comes first If you're being treated for pigmentation, the pigmented spots need to be checked first. Some can be skin cancers or other lesions that need medical assessment, and laser is not used on those. If a spot needs further assessment, we'll refer you rather than treat it. How it works The laser creates tiny controlled micro-injuries across the treatment area, which prompt the skin's natural healing response. Healing happens over the following days and weeks. What to expect, including risks Consultation: We assess your skin, explain whether treatment is suitable, and go over the risks and aftercare. Downtime: Redness, swelling, sensitivity or flaking are common straight after, and usually settle within a few days. Infection: As with any treatment that affects the skin, there's a risk of infection. Pigment changes and scarring: There's a risk of pigmentation changes, lighter or darker, and, less commonly, scarring. The risk is higher for darker skin tones, and some pigmentation, such as hormonal pigmentation, can return or worsen. Suitability: Not suitable for everyone, including people with certain skin conditions, recently tanned skin, those on medication that increases sun sensitivity, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Results vary from one person to the next. Aftercare Sun protection is essential. Avoid direct sun and use a high-SPF sunscreen on the treated areas. Follow the aftercare instructions we give you.
