This treatment uses polydioxanone (PDO) threads, a dissolvable surgical suture material, placed in or around the lips. The threads dissolve over time, and the treatment is sometimes repeated. It is one option for the lips. How it works The threads are introduced under the skin and provide some support to the tissue, and their presence also prompts the skin's natural healing response. Some threads are smooth and others have small barbs that anchor into the tissue. Before your treatment Tell us about any medicines and supplements you take, including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and green tea extract, as some can increase bruising. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without medical advice. We'll give you specific instructions at your consultation. What to expect, including risks Consultation: We assess your lips and health history, explain whether the treatment is suitable, and go over the risks and recovery. Recovery: Swelling and bruising are common in the first few days and can be noticeable around the lips. To avoid dislodging the threads, you'll be advised to avoid rubbing the area, pursing your lips, smoking, drinking through a straw, side-sleeping, intense exercise and saunas for a period afterwards. Risks: These can include infection, pain or tenderness, visible or palpable threads, threads moving or working their way out, dimpling, puckering or unevenness, and, less commonly, nerve irritation. Results vary from one person to the next and aren't guaranteed. Suitability: Not suitable for everyone, including people with certain medical conditions or active infection, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
