This treatment uses a laser to deliver focused light energy to pigmented areas of the skin. We offer it for the appearance of freckles and some other pigmented spots. A course of several treatments is often needed. Assessment comes first Pigmented spots must be checked before any treatment. Some can be skin cancers or other lesions that need medical assessment, and laser is not used on those. If a spot needs further assessment, we'll refer you rather than treat it. What to expect, including risks Consultation: We assess your skin and the spots you're concerned about, and explain whether treatment is suitable, the risks and the aftercare. Darkening first: Treated spots usually look darker before they fade. Downtime: Redness, swelling or sensitivity can occur and usually settle within a short time. Infection: As with any treatment that affects the skin, there's a risk of infection. Pigment changes and scarring: There's a risk of pigmentation changes, lighter or darker, and, less commonly, scarring. The risk is higher for darker skin tones, and some pigmentation, such as hormonal pigmentation, can return or worsen. Suitability: Not suitable for everyone, including people with certain skin conditions, recently tanned skin, those on medication that increases sun sensitivity, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Results vary from one person to the next. Aftercare Sun protection is essential. Avoid direct sun and use a high-SPF sunscreen on the treated areas. Follow the aftercare instructions we give you.
